AimRegenerating forest is a landscape which growing a forest after a disturbance such as fire, disease, infection or human activities. In this succession process dominant tree species are vary with time. Due to this habitat variation, there is a succession in butterfly diversity from grass land to canopied forest. So butterflies are indicator species in forest regeneration.
MethodsIn the research a butterfly survey in Maragamuwa regenerating forest have been done. The data were collected by using the line transect method. The data were collected two days per week. Species richness was calculated by using Margalef index and Species diversity by Shannon diversity index. The habitat partition of butterflies was identified among the natural forest and the regenerating forest.
ResultsIn the survey, 42 species of butterflies of six families were recorded. Some species are found only in natural forest, some species are found only in regenerating forest. Some species were recorded at both natural and regenerating forest. Indicator species were found to the succession of the forest.
ConservationDue to this research the butterfly diversity of the regenerating forest was identified and some species are endemic to the island and threatened according to the IUCN 2012. Therefore get an idea about the habitat of these species is important to conserve them. Also awareness programs can be followed to protect the habitat.
