Long-term, individual-based datasets are important because changing environmental or ecological conditions may confound patterns observed over short periods and preclude meaningful interpretation about the species’ ecology or behaviour. While the Asian elephant has had a long, complex relationship with humans, few individual-based studies of this species exist in the wild. I present results from the first study in India monitoring a large number of individually identified Asian elephants, in which data were collected on associations, behaviour, and genetic relatedness, in order to understand social organization and dominance relationships.
