AimThe bird diversity of Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal, India was studied to form a baseline data about several local bird species of this area.
MethodsBirds were surveyed by direct sighting and through line transect method which was carried out over a period of nine months from July 2012 to March 2013. Altogether 108 bird species belonging to 52 families were recorded from the study area. The study area was divided into three major habitat types: Open Scrub, Dry Deciduous and Urbanized.In this study, density/abundance analysis was done using DISTANCE software
ResultsThe maximum species diversity was observed in Open Scrub where a total of 60 species were recorded. However, the maximum number of feeding guilds was found in Dry deciduous forest. Of the 108 species observed, 30 species were winter visitors. It was found that dry deciduous forest had the greatest abundance, which was found out to be 41.12 birds per hectare. Also the maximum diversity was found during the winter season for most transects.
ConservationThis study creates a detailed photographic record of the birds diversity of IIFM campus. We intend to make an online platform where IIFM students can see the birds present at the campus and contribute their observations and photographs as well. This study also aimed to create awareness towards conservation of these beautiful creatures among fellow students so that they can contribute in a better way to the future of conservation.
