Tools and techniques used to enhance conservation outcomes is conservation biotechnology. Biotechnology yeilds techniques and applications that allow changes and improvements in living organisms to provide desirable products for our use. The range of techniques and applications currently used in biotechnology could be also adapted for conservation purposes. Majority of species that are on the brink of extinction because of the rapid loss of habitat and genetic diversity, mainly come from poverty and strife ridden areas of the world, from global biodiversity hotspots and islands countries. Therefore, in vitro measures that are many and varied, could be readily used for these species, so that extinction risk could be substantially reduced. It also makes these tools easily accessible by variety of stakeholders.
This workshop will introduce this emerging field of science by describing the efforts made on diverse fauna, and the application of in vitro and cryopreservation methods. In addition, it will provide insights on propagation of endangered animals, storage of gametes and reintroduction. The workshop will allow students to come up with areas of research that they would like to employ these techniques and formulate ideas for projects in this field. These ideas will be discussed and moderated so that the students take with them research ideas that they might be able to pursue in due course of time.
