Environmental Income and Poverty : Livelihoods in a central Indian Adivasi community affected by Conservation Induced Displacemen
Introduction: What conservation problem or question does your study address?
Environmental inc refers to inc from open scrubs and forest and broadly the study follows the def ‘Env inc refers collectin from for and non for areas ‘(Angelsen14). Non env inc is inc from agri, wage, livestock and fodder (fodder should be part of env inc but the data could not disting b/w stall fed and open grazed ani.)QsDoes env inc vary between diff households in a dry land regionHow does env dependence relate to other livelihoodsFactors determining dependence on env inc
Methods: What were the main research methods you used?
The study has utilized information gathered from 301 households belonging to 24 resettled villages as part of a larger project “Post Relocation Livelihood Restoration: A study of 24 villages in MP, India (Unpublished)” The questionnaire collected demographic information, farm and non-farm income and information about the environmental income from each household. Also annual income from agriculture, wage, livestock and income from forest was also asked by the respondents and then we were able to derive the total income of a household for the year 2011-12. However, my research focused on income from forest and open scrub lands and this information was then used to look at linkages with other incomes.Only adivasi households were chosen as they depend more on natural resources. statistical software such as R was used along with various functions of Microsoft excel.
Results: What are your most important results?
On an average environmental income contributes Rs 6800 per annum to the total income of the households who engage in collection of environmental produce. Some households get environmental income as high as Rs 173000. Out of the total sample of 233, 143 households collected environmental income. Some of the reasons is access to the Nice ecological spaces, family members, low working capital to engage in Agriculture, bad quality of land etc.
Discussion: What are your important discussion points and what is the relevance of your results to conservation (if any)?
Most studies do not use the term environmental income and use terms such as income from forest or NTFP income leaving out incomes from open scrubs and other property regimes this study tries to show that income can come from any of the 4 property regimes namely private, open access, state and common pool resources.
