The aim of this work is to investigate the change in the green spaces and corridors for bird diversity of Pune affected due to rapid urbanisation. Pune during 1960’s and 1970’s was rich in green spaces and supported bird diversity but the era of rapid urbanisation changed these green spaces into concrete jungles. The study thus looks at a variety of urban landscape elements in relation to bird species using newer aspects of landscape ecology.
The research methodology includes expert interviews of ornithologists who have been living in Pune for the last several decades. A field survey to identify existing ecologically good patches of tree cover, scrublands with corridors for birds. GPS coordinates and pictures were taken. Digitizing the entire study area into different landscape elements with different colour codings using GIS softwares.
The study showed that the avian profile has changed drastically due to urban expansion of Pune. The results of the expert interviews have showed that the bird diversity in terms of wetland and woodland birds has reduced drastically with the expansion of the city. This comprehensive work on mapping of Pune’s landscape elements and its relation to avian profile has provided indicators of environmental changes in this rapidly expanding city.
The use of concepts of island biogeography, corridoring and use of the urban matrix by different avifauna has shown that studies of this nature can be used for prospective planning for future growth of a potential mega city. A high degree of public awareness is required to preserve environmental assets and reverse negative trends that have occurred.
