IUCN assessments play a major role in conservation of species from extinction, globally. Till date, no Indian orchids have been assessed and there is an urgent need to fill this data gap on this highly traded charismatic plant group. Since the last amphibian assessments in 2004 where 268 species have been assessed, close to a hundred new species have been described and much data has been gathered on other species making it imperative for a complete reassessment of the group.
1. Data compilation and literature survey
2. Botanical Survey of India & Zoological Survey of India – Herbarium/museum survey and specimen study
3. Field surveys
4. Data compilation from experts in the Amphibian Network of South Asia/Amphibian Specialist Group-South Asia regional network.
5. Creation of distribution map using ArcGIS
6. Peer review through workshop and emails.
Of the 1331 orchids, data compilation of 123 taxa from Western Ghats is completed, of which 95 are endemic to Western Ghats. The distribution maps for all these species is ready and threat information is also available based on all the publications for each species. India consists of 342 species of amphibians, of which 135 species are endemic to Western Ghats. 32 species have been compiled till date. The species assessments for rest of the orchids and amphibians are ongoing.
IUCN data provides a single platform for all information on a species that can be used as baseline data by researchers, be it filling data gaps or conserving CR species. Species information on threats faced by amphibians and orchids will help formulate conservation strategies and policies. The primary information of the analysis brings Alliance for Zero Extinction sites and the Key Biodiversity Areas to the forefront for critical conservation prioritization.
