Social and Ecological Dimensions of Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation

Social and Ecological Dimensions of Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation Presented by Jagdish Krishnaswamy, Nachiket Kelkar, Tarun Nair and Vidyadhar Atkore[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row make_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”3.12.2″ custom_padding=”0|0px|27px|0px|false|false”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”3.12.2″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.12.2″]

Workshop Overview:

The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to various threats facing freshwater biodiversity and social-ecological systems across global and regional scales, with a focus on South and Southeastern Asia. Through lectures, case studies, discussions and activity sessions, the workshop will bring up contemporary challenges inherent to freshwater conservation given their uniqueness and differences as compared with terrestrial systems and land-based conservation paradigms that dominate environmental discourse. It will help develop a comparative understanding of conservation targets and approaches, attempting to strongly integrate social and ecological processes and dimensions in conserving freshwater systems as a whole, than in the form of isolated components. The workshop will encourage participants towards conservation and policy endeavor for freshwater systems, beyond typecast instrumental and/or purely theoretical solutions to real-world problems.

1. Topical Session- Overview of Threats to Freshwater Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Description: Threats facing freshwater: Dams and other flood control structures, flow alterations, channel stabilization and channelization, industries, agriculture, mining, loss of habitats, invasive species, fisheries collapse etc.

Resource Person(s)- JK

Time duration- 45 mins: 0900-0945 AM

2. Topical Session- Discussion 1

Description: Challenges in conserving freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity: The South Asian context. Lead-in to the workshop

Resource Person(s)- TN

Time duration- 35 mins: 0945-1010 AM

3. Topical Session- Concepts to understand freshwater ecosystems

Description: How are freshwater ecosystems different from terrestrial ecosystems? How do we select conservation targets and approaches? Conservation issues given ecological similarities and differences with terrestrial systems, concepts of scale, hierarchy and dynamism, asymmetry and linear dependence.

Resource Person(s)- NK

Time duration- 40 mins: 1010-1050 AM

4. Topical Session- Activity Session

Participants will be divided into three groups and each group will be given a freshwater conservation problem to address –related to real-life examples from India and abroad. They will get 25 minutes each to discuss and come up with conservation targets and approaches, and the processes that they would engage with to deal with the problem. Each group will be exchanging ideas with one of us. Each group, in a 10-minute presentation, will present these problems and 5-minute discussions will follow.

Resource Person(s)- All

Time Duration- 1050-1100 AM (briefing)

1100-1110 AM (Tea)

1110-1210 AM (Activity)
