Study of Change Detection of Mangroves along Mundra Coast of Gujarat Using Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics

Introduction: What conservation problem or question does your study address?
Change Detection Study has been found a valuable application tool in Mangroves Detection and conservation. As area of Mangrove is not highly accessible manually, Satellite monitoring is very important tool to bring out the impact of Deforestation on study area with the particular time period. Impact of Density Change with its biotic interference is also an important aim to achieve for particular area as anthropogenic growth is also attached with it.
Methods: What were the main research methods you used?
With the use of Arc GIS, ENVI and Quantem GIS softwares we have performed Image processing & GIS analysis with Supervised & Unsupervised Classification and Map generation over the period of 1994 to 2010 for Land Use/Land Cover change study. Digitization of Mangrove Patches was also done by GIS Softwares. Database statistics for Sparse, Dense and Potential Mangroves with its attribute information was also generated with representation of Confusion Matrix. Change Detection Map was created with its accuracy to show appropriate result of Changes over the years.
Results: What are your most important results?
Changes between 1994 & 2000 shows that Area of Dense and Potential Mangroves is increased, whereas Sparse Mangrove is decreased. Changes between 2000 & 2010 imageries helped us to know that Dense & Sparse Mangroves increased during these 10 years, while Potential areas were decreased due to anthropogenic pressure, when we compare imageries from 1994 to 2010, it shows that Dense Mangroves increased during these 16 years, while Sparse & Potential areas were decreased.
Discussion: What are your important discussion points and what is the relevance of your results to conservation (if any)?
Change Detection study gave information about Mangrove ecosystem through which we conclude about particular habitat, its Rehabilitation, Restoration & Status about potential areas with its Biotic interference with the use of modern technology like RS & GIS. Mundra achieved increment of Mangroves even though increasing in infrastructure activities nearby areas, due to awareness of People & efforts of Gujarat Ecological Commission with Gujarat Government.
