Thinking quantitatively

Presented by Numbers are at the heart of all quantitative data analyses. But the numbers themselves are not the goal of our analyses. The goal is to understand the world better. How can we more effectively use numbers in the service of this goal? What pitfalls must we avoid? In this workshop, we will discuss issues like: what makes a good metric, when should one transform variables, the utility (and limits) of mathematical modelling, what is the real meaning of a P-value, what results of a statistical analysis are most relevant to understanding the world? Main aims and goal:The purpose of this workshops is, on the one hand, to demystify some of the most common quantitative procedures; and on the other, to demonstrate how you can use quantitative procedures and thinking in your research design, analyses, and interpretation. Students will not be instructed how to carry out particular statistical procedures; rather we will discuss more fundamental issues of quantitative measurement, estimation and inference.
