Organising Workshops, Panel Discussions, Mini Symposia at SCCSBengaluru 2018
CALL FOR ORGANISING A WORKSHOP : NOW CLOSED DEADLINE - 5th July, 2018 (23:55h IST)
Overview: At SCCS-Bengaluru, we offer participants a range of research and capacity building skills workshops through the four days of the conference. The workshops introduce students to new ideas, concepts and techniques in conservation science and practice and are offered by experienced scientists and practitioners.
Workshops : Workshops should typically teach and highlight new concepts and key research and practical skills to students and be as interactive as possible. Sufficient time should be allotted by the organiser for discussion around the topic. We therefore ask organisers to plan for their workshops with all of the above in mind. Organisers can use examples from their own research work during their presentations and discussion but the workshop should cover the larger topic being discussed.
Long workshops/discussions or mini-symposia take place over 6 hours starting in the morning until late afternoon.
Short workshops/discussions or mini-symposia and are 2 hrs 30 mins in duration.
Mini-Symposium : You can host a mini symposium if you would like to present and discuss the research work and findings that you specifically or your Institution has been carrying out. Mini symposia differ from workshops and panel discussions in that they typically do not need to be interactive and there is more of information dissemination of your research findings and on ground conservation work. You can coordinate and invite a panel of experts for this. When planning your session, please keep in mind that SCCSBengaluru attracts participants from all over the world and so if your proposed topic is very India/country specific, please do mention this in the workshop format document (in the additional comments section).
Panel Discussion : You can organise and host a panel discussion/debate on a topical conservation subject/issue which you feel will be useful for students to think about and get an overview of. You can invite a panel of experts who will lead the discussion with you or have an invited panelist facilitating the process. Examples of discussion topics in previous conferences have been Conservation targets: should we focus on species, ecosystems or services?; Human wildlife conflict:gaps in our understanding; Wildlife research ethics and compassionate conservation.
What SCCS-Bengaluru can offer workshop organisers :
Separate room/seminar hall to conduct your workshop/ panel discussion/mini symposium.
Rooms will be allocated depending on numbers of participants attending each workshop.
Please note that internet connectivity is problematic in most rooms in IISc other than the main seminar halls and therefore please keep this in mind while planning for your workshop.
Please let us know in advance what other requirements you would need: computer, projector, blackboard, printouts, compulsory reading material etc.
SCCS Bengaluru is a low-cost student conference run collaboratively by a group of organisations and individuals in a voluntary capacity. We raise funds every year from conservation organisations, well wishers and other donors to cover conference costs and to cover the cost of student bursaries. We would deeply appreciate it if you or your Institution are able to raise your own funds towards your travel and stay during SCCS. We would also greatly welcome any extra monetary support you can provide to the overall running of the conference. In case you are unable to raise your own funds, SCCS has limited funds to contribute towards the primary workshop organiser’s travel costs (within India), their conference registration costs and boarding and lodging. If there will be other co-organisers or panelists in your workshop, we request that funds for their costs be raised from their institutions or elsewhere.
We look forward keenly to forging new ties and partnerships with organisations and institutions, so do get in touch with us if you need more information.
